More SB

The SB Festival coordinator has been an amazing role model for me throughout this project. No matter what urgency we faced, she was cool and calm. Here she is at the festival on Sunday (the festival she is coordinating, the festival she will have to dismantle in a few short hours) enjoying herself hoolahooping while she listens to one of the bands.

I am in party planning mode, which means I am trying to find donors to provide the food, beverages and volunteer gifts for Friday's event. I have 6 cases of beverages and a grocer who will donate crackers. More calls to make tomorrow.

Images from Day One of the festival

Auto update: The computer failure was related to the ABS & anti-skid systems. Several times over these four years of ownership, as I've serviced the car I have been repeatedly reporting that the anti-skid system activated for no apparent reason - each time assured that it was functioning properly. So when the service rep approached Toyota to see what they could do - they checked my service records and saw this - so they have agreed to pay for the part and the rental - I just have to pay the labor.

I am now in the curious position of being relieved to only have to pay $230. But relieved I most certainly am.

And now - a few images from the festival...

My photo taking was limited by by official job which necessitated that I stay in the volunteer center most of the time. But I did manage to get out a few times.

Remarkable bit of advertising....

From the visit to Zora's house whenever that was. I'm so busy right now that I'm cheating and posting Cynthia's photo. Doesn't Z. look angelic?

Not a good day

The Behemoth died.

The Prius lost its braking system (while I was driving down Market Street. No accident, thank goodness.)

I may be coming down with a cold.

And the SB Festival bears down.

Philip Zimbardo - The Psychology of Evil

The countdown

These are the final days before the festival and chaos reigns. Not to mention the bizarre. This morning I had to drive to the southern bit of Seattle to retrieve donated gifts for out volunteers: discount coupons and cloth grocery bags and ....ZooDoo! Yup! Animal poop from the animals of the Woodland Park Zoo! Six buckets stashed in my car. Aren't you jealous?
There were so many messages on my phone machine that when I got back, an error code was displayed indicating the machine had run out of memory. I can't recall the last time that happened.

A million and one things left to do.

Sock Puppets

Another Sustainable-Ballard kind of day...

Aaron with one of his sock puppet creations.

Jenny models a volunteer sash.

I have no idea what these are for, but we painted them.

End of Summer

My first ripe tomatoes - and just as the fall arrives.
Rainy and cool today - but still the volunteer crew for SustainableBallard was at work.
We painted several batik banners under the shelter of tents in Jenny's backyard. Afterwards, I dropped in with the House Circle to circulate two parts of Eye of the Needle. I had the damnedest time tryin to count in four. Still, some very worthwhile moments of balanced attention.

Opening Night - the images

Outside of the venue...

(Notice that my little garden outside the venue is still doing nicely.)

Inside the venue, we have Meleah on the lights...

...and the house team setting up...

and the players warming up.

After the show and before the encore, we had a little thracking for Bob's birthday.

The show was hot! The team was ready and cooking - no gradual ramp up. Curt even included 'In My Room' & 'Cultivating the Beat' in the setlist - which is a clue as to the level of confidence the team possessed.

Milestones

1. I got my first locally-earned bit of income this week - a payment for this volunteer coordinating gig that keeps me busy.

2. One or two ears of corn in the garden are finally mature enough to harvest.

3. MB & Ian managed to transfer understanding of the picking pattern to the opening of King for Day - which we have been using as an anchor exercise.

4. An email arrives inviting me to be one of the artists featured in a 2-person show next June here in Seattle.

musings on water exercise

Yesterday there was a moment in the water exercise class when I felt myself moving easily and gracefully through the water. This isn't always the case, of course. The class is rigorous and I'm usually scrambling. But in this particular moment, my movements were large and free. It surprised me. In a split second I saw that it was because I was uninhibited. No one could really see my body as I was submerged nearly up to my shoulders - and this invisibility produced a sense of freedom.

And I can't get over how beautiful the water is when we manage to get it restless and sparkling. I don't take my camera to the pool because I don't want to have to deal with watching over it. And what I'm seeing that is so beautiful isn't necessarily something a camera can capture. The camera could grab a moment, or compress several moments - and neither of these is what its all about. And in anycase, I'm quite satisfied to experience it 'real-time' - at least for now.

The music they play at the pool during these sessions is often jarring - even when I enjoy the selections, as I do when it is Aretha Franklin or the Beatles. The problem is that the rhythm of the music always seem at odds with what we are doing in the pool. I'd like to commission work that had poly rhythms so one could entrain with the rhythm that suited one's ability. It is very very strange to be moving one's body to a given rhythm while the Four Tops are cooking along at a different pace. Of course, when it is Olivia Newton John, I just want to close my ears. I wish at least one of the instructors was into silence.

It is too late for anything but a quick glance at the contents of my CF card, so this is all I have to offer.

David Foster Wallace February 21, 1962 – September 12, 2008

It is 6pm and I'm already exhausted

Up very late last night with TTA work. First order of business was the design of the program. I prepared two versions. One is exactly as planned. The other one is an attempt to provide a map of the performers in the credits/company listings. (An idea CG characterized as 'dopey' but that I feel has merit.) Surprisingly, the second one - the 'dopey' one - was easier than the first - largely because Jaxie had a very specific way she wanted the indenting of the credits to appear and InDesign was uncooperative about letting me do it and I was forced to 'format' it mostly 'by hand'.

Here, in my 'circular' presentation of the company credits, there was very little formatting required - just a big circular text container.

The rest of the evening was devoted to printing on the Behemoth. But first, cartridge replacement and paper swap. And calibration. And creation of a printing profile for the new paper. The printing gods were with me because my yellow ink cartridge mysteriously got very low (and I don't have a replacement on hand) - yet I managed to print more than 40 square feet of prints over the evening and have 8 milliliters of yellow left. A little too close for comfort.

Banner 56'x22"

So I began the day today with less than a full tank of energy.

Met at CG for morning sitting and then headed over to Jenny's for a SusBallard work party. We silkscreened 2nd-hand t-shirts bought at the Goodwill. I have never silkscreened before - so just learning something new made it worthwhile.

Slipped away around 1pm to headed back over to CG's for the house guitar circle. Sagging energy levels were evident here. I'm not even sure I can explain what we did - and not because it was complicated. The time went by remarkably quickly and very soon I was back at the work party - where they were mostly done and just cleaning up. Jenny has chickens - and these birds wandered around underfoot like some dogs do. So the clean up was made amusing by the presence of these funny birds.

And here's a photo I took of Scott and his young son. Scott is the graphic designer working on the festival - and the lead for the silkscreening booth.

Technical rehearsal (& screen test!)

Last night was the first rehearsal back in Fremont Abbey. It was sobering to get back into the space and face the set-up again.

What fun! (Not!)

And finally making music again...

A cameraman in our midst...

Travis' business partner is wanting to do a short documentary film on the project so he dropped by to make some preliminary test video footage.

After Igor had to split for a gig, Ian stepped up to the riser for the remainder of the rehearsal.
