December 27th - studio

I accidentally wasted my sliver of afternoon sunlight by having the wrong camera setting. (at last night's gig i set the quality to a lower standard for still images in order to have room on the CF card for the videos. despite this - and for the first time ever - i got an error that the card was full in the middle of the trio's set.) the result is that the raw files - the files that would be used to produce prints on the Behemoth are about a third of the size necessary for today's images. they can be enjoyed online, but nowhere else. ah well.

Boxing Day

An evening walk through Ballard.

Returned home to find the apartment reeking of fumes. Each time the furnace came on, it got worse. I called the landlord who is away for the holidays. At 3am I decided to turn off the furnace.

Today's ~20 minute window of opportunity of studio sunlight arrived earlier than I expected. I am having a difficult time choosing which to pursue. Some differences are subtle, some dramatic.

In the evening, off to capitol hill with (IgorA's girlfriend) Lianne and Travis' mother, Brigitte to hear various locals perform. Images are still downloading, but here is a taste.

the christmas studio

For several weeks I have been for this period so productive work could be done in the studio. Now that the day has arrived, I realize I had overlooked the lowered arc of the sun's transit across the sky. The house to the south blocks the sun's light for much of the day in my basement windows. At ~3:30pm a short, 15-minute window of opportunity to work with sunlight appeared in the living room window.

winter solstice 2009

I so love the solstice. Winter or summer, it doesn't matter. The solstice is my favorite celebration.

The summer solstice usually involves sitting around a fire and sharing stories. The winter solstice is the one for which I have not found a way of sharing with others that feels authentic and right.

Tonight, however, I came home and found that Gitta's gift had arrived. This will do.

And this week, I have finally learned the basic form of the Bach Bourree that Curt has been teaching me. Now to get it to sound like music!

Loki

Loki is a Pomeranian who belongs to Andy, a co-worker of mine. Loki is the brightest part of any day that he comes to the office. The first day he showed up, he was a little timid. Within a week he would go from workstation to workstation with his ball trying to find someone to play fetch with. When he came in today he let out a few little yelps and ran the length of the office as if to say, 'I'm here!' Later he was sitting on my lap as I worked and then got up on my desk to snooze.

the weekend

His Wolfeness is trying to make me homesick. he sends these video snippets (usually 5 seconds or less - sometimes too short for me to actually figure out where he is) of different places in the Bay Area. This one is from the KPFA Crafts Fair, an event he and I had attended together every year between 1994 and 2006.

Watching this performance was a bit like watching internet poker players.*

* clarification: sonically, it was a fabulous evening. I always find these events visually strange, however.

OK, so season nine isn't exactly around the corner (slated to begin after the course in Italy) but it is time to begin thinking about it....

Travis and Igor...

Steve Ball invited Igor and Travis to join them for a last minute gig at a coffee shop in Captial Hill. I caught a few moments of the performance, espresso machine and all.

remodeling at the office

At the office, the demolition of walls took place during the weekend. Temporary plastic walls were up to limit dust from traveling. They also limited our movement through the office. One of my co-workers made stick figure portraits of each of us on it.

my co-worker Leif has been in a mixed martial arts tournament over the weekend and had a souvenir to show for it.
