December 27th - studio

I accidentally wasted my sliver of afternoon sunlight by having the wrong camera setting. (at last night's gig i set the quality to a lower standard for still images in order to have room on the CF card for the videos. despite this - and for the first time ever - i got an error that the card was full in the middle of the trio's set.) the result is that the raw files - the files that would be used to produce prints on the Behemoth are about a third of the size necessary for today's images. they can be enjoyed online, but nowhere else. ah well.

the christmas studio

For several weeks I have been for this period so productive work could be done in the studio. Now that the day has arrived, I realize I had overlooked the lowered arc of the sun's transit across the sky. The house to the south blocks the sun's light for much of the day in my basement windows. At ~3:30pm a short, 15-minute window of opportunity to work with sunlight appeared in the living room window.

an unwanted christmas gift is a cracked molar. this is the molar that was the subject of last year's root canal. what the endodontist feared has come to pass.

This work has felt sculptural. As I showered this morning a working title appeared: Deep Surfaces or Looking Deeply at Surfaces.

This one translate so differently between monitor and print that it almost isn't the same image.

A massive dust-up on Facebook today due to a change in their Terms of Service. FB wants to be authorized to do what they wish with ANY content you upload/post - even if you terminate your account and delete all your materials. I may stop using FB for sharing images.

Still icy and cold

A walk up and over Phinney Ridge this morning. Frost and leftover snow still in evidence.

Though it would be nice to be making some money, I am enjoying the studies I've set for myself in Plan B. Today, nose to the grindstone studying Illustrator. Funny how many things I am learning - mostly shortcuts - that also apply to Photoshop and InDesign. Bonus!

The sun was out today and just before sunset was making wonderful light on the windowsill in the living room.

Overexposure

Determined to work in the studio today, I have pulled out the strobes. I was hoping to be able to use nothing more than the modeling lights, but they were insufficient. The strobes, however, are like sledgehammers. Even at their lowest setting and with the camera at its smallest ISO. Part of the problem is the tiny studio space - the strobes are only a few feet from my subject. So I am getting more than a few of these:

There may be a way to make lemonade with that, but I'm not sure yet.

This morning's work came to a screeching halt when I attempted to isolate one of the blossoms by trimming another off the stem. The snap of the clippers was enough to send the pollen of the remaining blossom all over the place - including all over the pure white lily.

A white lily

A white lily opened today.

Seattle is very cold today. A light dusting of snow was evident in some neighborhoods this morning. And in the afternoon very light snow flurries came and went. The weather forecast tempts us with sun tomorrow.

fog and ice

Woke to dense fog in Ballard. Over on Phinney Ridge, it was icy. Some windshields were covered with elaborate patterns.

The Phinney Ridge tree was decked out for winter...

And when I got back to my car, the windshield had frozen. As I waited for it to thaw, I took a few photos.

And at Ballard Market this morning, they were ready with treats for your inauguration festivities.
