March is here

The printer is alerting me that it is low on yellow ink, so I just checked the ink levels - and inexplicably, I have been using yellow much, much faster than any other color. How strange...
Yesterday an email appeared in my inbox with the subject: Foothill College: Informational Interview I thougth for a moment that one of my job applications has born fruit. But it is an email from a photographer wanting to interview me for her photography class.

I forgot to post about the snow on Thursday. Yes, it snowed - again.

The TTA show on Thursday was a difficult one. I doubt anyone in the audience felt gypped because what the team does is always amazing, but there were lapses of quite significant proportions evident to those who know the material well.

Finished reading Anne Lamott's Joe Jones last night. A friend bought a bunch of copies last year and gave them to several friends - and I was one of those recipients. I have been procrastinating because I just can't seem to find time for contemporary fiction anymore. But I finally picked it up a week or so ago with high expectations based on my friend's enthusiasm. I'm a big fan of Lamott's Operating Instructions - a journal of the first year with her son Sam, but have never felt drawn to her fiction. And this book doesn't change that feeling. I was dissapointed - particularly with its ending. Too much unresolved plot left hanging. Though I admit the descriptions of the Bay Area's landscape and geography made me homesick.

Peeked into a biography of Warren Zevon, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, I picked up at the library. After a chapter or two, I decided it was unhealthy to read any more. Zevon was not a nice man.

And listening to This American Life's review of the banking crisis puts a damper on an already grey day.

Grasping for something upbeat to post - but can't really think of anything.

Nine minus one

Curt is still in Barcelona (they had a performance last night!) so the Tuning the Air show was short a player. As is traditional when someone is missing, their place remains in the circle and in this case it held the spare guitar.

Still working on show preparations. Editing is hard.

And making a few new images as time allows.

Rainy day with sunny outbursts

If I ever rule the world, I will decree that everyone working in HR submit a sample job application to their online systems - once each and every day! They need to know what hell it is to which they are subjecting job seekers. Today's snafu was particularly interesting in that confirmation of the job application required that one use an email client like Outlook rather than a web-based email interface like Yahoo or Hotjobs.

Since he's in Barcelona this week, I used Curt's apartment as a photo studio this morning. Made images of his and Travis' guitars for graphics fodder.

Played with these a bit today...

a long time ago...

In searching my files for images last night, I ran across some old family photos.

made by the man who was to become my father.

Michael Bosanko

"The photographs appear to show illuminated neon sculptures, when in fact they are created with five coloured torches - an advanced version of writing your name with a sparkler on bonfire night..."

More here.

And I just notived he has a video on his website that illuminates the situation.

more recent images

This work has felt sculptural. As I showered this morning a working title appeared: Deep Surfaces or Looking Deeply at Surfaces.

This one translate so differently between monitor and print that it almost isn't the same image.

A massive dust-up on Facebook today due to a change in their Terms of Service. FB wants to be authorized to do what they wish with ANY content you upload/post - even if you terminate your account and delete all your materials. I may stop using FB for sharing images.

Helvetica, the film

A film about a typeface? Yes. A wonderfully nerdy film. And I enjoyed it alot. Here's a short clip.

and another... this is from the DVD's 'extras'

Still icy and cold

A walk up and over Phinney Ridge this morning. Frost and leftover snow still in evidence.

Though it would be nice to be making some money, I am enjoying the studies I've set for myself in Plan B. Today, nose to the grindstone studying Illustrator. Funny how many things I am learning - mostly shortcuts - that also apply to Photoshop and InDesign. Bonus!

The sun was out today and just before sunset was making wonderful light on the windowsill in the living room.

LinkedIn as old-friend finder

A reconnection with an old CCSF classmate, Camden Toy, who is now an actor in LA. I sent him scans of the portraits I made of him almost 30 years ago.

Just color

Winter is still dominating the landscape with cold gray days. Tulips to the rescue!

Rainy Friday morning

Last night was the first show of the new Tuning the Air season. A respectable crowd (26) turned up and the team played well. The house team was short staffed and so BillR manned the admissions counter. I doubt anyone but our friends knew who it was that was taking their money!

Still applying for jobs, still keeping up with my self re-education program and still working in the studio.

I saw this on my friend David's blog and decided it needed to be shared.

Copycat

The cell phone photo above was sent to me with a note suggesting that the makers of the poster on the right owed me royalties or a licensing fee. It does appear that they have copied my idea.

Shigeo Fukuda (1932 - 2009)

More of Fukuda's work is here, though the video is in Spanish.
