learning music, crows

Lesson with Curt today. We have been working on the bouree of one of the Bach cello suites. This has been slow, measure by measure work offering me opportunities to learn many things simultaneously. I have prepared for the lesson by finding the sheet music online and struggling through learning the notes for the next two measures. While the notes have been nominally learned, the phrasing and musicality is absent. (Well, to be fair, I got a tiny, tiny taste of the flavor of the first measure, but absolutely none of the second.) Despite my efforts to understand the sheet music (even studying a recording) it is only a series of notes. At the lesson, Curt infuses them with music. Still, it takes many, many repetitions before any of this musicality moves into my hands. I listen to him and in my mind's eye, I see the sheet music I have been studying - trying to leap the chasm between the black marks on a page and the sounds I am hearing. Before leaving the lesson, I have managed a dozen or so executions of the new measures. Later, arriving at the office, I pull the guitar from its case and remind myself of what has just been learned. At lunch, I do the same, but I find that the second measure is lost! I can only play it as I was able on arriving to the lesson - a dry series of notes of equal weight and emphasis. I am a human sieve for musical knowledge. It takes ~fifteen minutes of exploring to find the door back to the music.

Departing from the office in the thick atmosphere of storm clouds at the verge of sunset, the landscape is covered in cawing crows. They fill the trees and line the tops of buildings like snipers. Their caw, caw, cawing is so strange. not quite menacing; a raucous gravitas. I am tempted to linger. As I write this, I wonder why I didn't.

Oct 15 2009

some images from tonight's pre-show:

David lent me a couple of lenses he's selling. Of the two, the wide angle (17mm) held the most promise for me. However, being a financial realist, I have returned both this evening until some plan for payment might be devised.

Assuming, of course, that he doesn't find a buyer elsewhere first.

After the show last night, a huddle appeared over the piano. It seems Ingrid brought a book she made of Guitar Craft images over the years. Tony, Bill, Jax & Diana huddle for a closer look.

A cold, gray Saturday in Seattle

Tony oversees the metronome

TonyG. is in town for the next few weeks! He dropped in for the rehearsal this morning and had great observations about the sound in the space. With the way sound moves in this space, there is a real question about what it measn to play 'in time'.

An afternoon house circle at Curts. Circulations in A Minor.

Planning to make prints donations. In the process of researching the considerations.

We might as well get fired for doing something fun.

Another day at the day-job from hell. The powers-that-be notified us that we were required to provide an updated department photo for our department website. We decided that since we are very likely on the verge of getting fired anyway, we'd have a little fun with it.

Housewarming at Igor & Lianne's

printed the final print for the Texas art consultant (whose deposit check arrived earlier in the week!) and set up the printing for two others i am giving them on consignment.

while the printer chugged away, i hightailed it over to fremont abbey to make photos of the team in the new space.

Bob arrived toward the end of the session and i snapped (at Igor's encouragement) a photo of Ian showing Bob his zither chord.

back home to finish printing. one of the images I printed today had been printed by the controversial printer back in California (the very same printer the art consultant tried to insist that I use.) this gave me yet another side-by-side comparison - and there is no question that the Behemoth produces the superlative print.

baked several loaves of bread and walked over to Igor & Lianne's new place. (it is only 10 blocks away!) while i am there, Igor tells me he had a dream and 'saw' a photograph of he and Lianne on the back porch. in the dream he was playing his 12-string. he asked if i would take the photo, so i obliged.

Another Friday

yesterday a shipment arrived that was supposed to contain a badly needed ink cartridge - but it was a different color than the yellow one that was ordered.

up late last night printing and then packing the print order for the Palo Alto gallery/art consultant. two of the prints had pinhole-sized flaws. this is a common problem with large-scale inkjet printing. finding a technique to repair such flaws has eluded me - until last night. using water-soluble pastels and a moist, fine-tip paint brush worked well. yes!!!!!

the Behemoth is now reporting that it has more yellow ink than before printing these prints! but it still reports that it is 'low' on yellow.

a day at the office:

my major task of the day? developing a history of the events leading up to the mr.b explosion over translation costs.

Zs' birthday party

DavidE's daughter turned 3 in July and yesterday was her birthday celebration. Taking quite seriously my role as a non-parental, adult influence in Z's life, I included a kazoo in her 5-part gift.

Z's cake goes beyond the usual birthday greeting and says 'Elephant!!!' It also includes an illustration of an elephant nestled in with the icing roses.
